Art of The Ocean

A mesmerizing book that unveils a symphony of poetic wonder, brimming with boundless imagination and profound sensibility. Within its pages, an ethereal collection of photographs showcases the enigmatic lives of underwater creatures.

I still vividly remember my first meeting with the author and how I was in awe of the stunning photographs. I felt like I was dreaming in a realm where dreams intertwined with reality, in a surreal world hidden deep within the big blue sea.

From that moment, I knew that my role as a book designer was to keep the beauty of these splendid photographs into a book. After discussions with the author, we decided to organize the photographs ranging from majestic creatures to the tiniest sea organisms, including nudibranchs (sea slugs).

I decided to use grids and white space to create a simple and minimalistic layout to contrasts with the colorful underwater scenes. The layout doesn’t include any text or design elements, relying solely on white space to enhance the visual experience. The only sections for reading are in the foreword and toward the end of the book. The primary design goal is to convey the silent, serene, yet emotionally surreal underwater world.

Within the book’s pages, the author’s essays are uniquely presented as insertion pages, showcasing actual handwriting. Watercolor illustrations and playful doodles have been added to evoke the author’s emotions.
